Danzantes Espadin Reposado

Los Danzantes Espad*n Reposado takes the earthy, smoky character of traditional Oaxacan Espad*n and introduces a carefully judged period of oak maturation. Produced at the Los Danzantes distillery in Oaxaca, Mexico, it is made from 100% Espad*n agave (Agave angustifolia) and bottled at 43% ABV. The agave is cooked in an underground conical wood-fired oven, crushed using a traditional horse-drawn stone mill, naturally fermented for six days in 800-litre wooden vats using native yeasts, and then double distilled in 250 litre copper stills.

What separates the Reposado from the Joven is at least nine months of maturation, with each batch divided between 70% American white oak and 30% French white oak barrels. The wood adds vanilla, maple, coconut and warm oak notes without completely covering the cooked agave and smoke underneath. It is a particularly interesting middle ground for whisky drinkers exploring mezcal: unmistakably agave-driven, but with enough oak influence and sweetness to make the transition considerably easier.

Tasting Notes Colour: Mahogany gold. Nose: Elegant smoke and earthy roasted agave, followed by vanilla, maple syrup and warm oak. The barrel influence is noticeable but doesn't dominate the mezcal's more savoury character. Palate: Rounded and robust, with sweet cooked agave developing into coconut, vanilla and seasoned wood.

Gentle smoke remains underneath, providing balance against the sweeter oak-derived flavours. Finish: Long and warming, with lingering vanilla, coconut, wood and soft smoke.
